About bloody time! As an Australian (fifth generation), I have long felt a deep feeling of shame not only for the tragedy of the “Stolen Generation” but also, in general terms, for the non-indigenous community’s failure to address the plight of Aborigines: their appallingly short average lifespans; bleeding heart economic and cultural initiatives that have been patronising and poorly thought out; ongoing racism in certain quarters; limited higher education opportunities; a lack of commitment to genuine integration (for those in the indigenous community who opt for that course), etc. This apology is a warmly welcome, albeit belated, first step, but much still needs to be done before they have full equal rights – and true dignity.
