LA CALA - Size does also matter

With 66 existing golf courses, and at least 35 other projects on the drawing boards, the Costa del Sol is Europe’s premier golfing destination. This month, continuing our series on the courses of the “Costa del Golf”, we feature La Cala Resort.

It’s now official. According to the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, La Cala Resort – with three 18-hole championship courses, a six-hole par-3 layout and the David Leadbetter Golf Academy – is the largest golf complex in Spain.

Created in 1989 by the Irish insurance company FBD Holdings, and situated in the hills between Sierra de Mijas nature park and the Mediterranean coastline, the golf, hotel and residential resort extends over four million square metres.

The three courses have been designed by golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, former European director for Robert Trent Jones and a designer of international repute in his own right. Each course offers different challenges, with the South layout (completed in 1991) a tight but spectacular challenge; the North (1992) longer and featuring the complex’s three flattest holes; and the most recent Europa (2005) bringing the Ojen river into play on eight holes.

Last November, the resort was the venue for the Ladies European Tour’s first Qualifying School held in Spain; and it is also the winter headquarters for various European golf federations and international football teams.
