Restaurant with a difference

Since its arrival in Marbella last year, Magna Café has caused quite a stir − for its stunning location and exquisite food. Part of the Magna Marbella complex (which includes a development of luxury apartments with lush private gardens and, more recently, a nine-hole golf course) the restaurant’s large terrace offers exceptional views of Gibraltar, Africa and the mountains. Bearing in mind the setting, location and general features of the Magna complex, owner Stjrborn Holm decided the design of the restaurant and clubhouse should be kept fairly "neutral".

That decision aside, however, the elegant and tasteful décor and architecture have resulted in a stylish and sophisticated venue. Centrepieces include a high-beamed ceiling, open wine cellar (including a superb selection of Spanish wines), and large terrace with breathtaking views. Drinks and cocktails, prepared by a team of the Coast’s finest bartenders, can be enjoyed night or day at a long panelled bar, and an intimate banqueting room is becoming popular for business functions and private parties. Artists and local galleries have the opportunity of showing high-end collections throughout the restaurant, with a separate space for exhibitions and special events. All-in-all Magna Café is a venue with a difference: stunning views, an inviting ambience, and a great place for lunch, dinner, drinks or even morning coffee (with golf available as well).

People return time and time again to Magna Café for the superb food and excellent service. The head chef is also a co-owner of the restaurant, which guarantees dishes of the highest standard from a menu which combines Italian, Mediterranean and Scandinavian influences.

On this occasion we tried tiger prawns sautéed in olive oil, lemon juice and garlic, on a bed of roasted pepper; toast "Magna" - a mix of shrimps, red onion, crème fraîche and dill topped with red caviar; succulent beef medallions on a bed of gorgonzola and pistachio nut sauce; and "Africana" tenderloin in a creamy curry sauce with bananas, peanuts and exotic fruits. The menu is extensive, with a good choice for lunch and dinner including hot or cold starters, daily specials, fresh fish, meat, poultry, and delicious rice and pasta dishes.
