WHAT’S ON SCREEN THIS MONTH… WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT… AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS INSIDE THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

BEN STILLER, JACK BLACK, ROBERT DOWNEY JR. STEVE COOGAN  Death Race – 26 September (3 October in Spain)Another 1970s sci-fi yawn is given a 21st century revamp. An ex-con framed for a gruesome murder is forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in the post-industrial world’s most popular sport – a car race where inmates take no prisoners. The prize: freedom for the winner. JASON STATHAM, JOAN ALLEN. Coming next month: Quantum of Solace, How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, High School Musical 3  THE DUCHESS  KEIRA KNIGHTLEY adds another period drama to her ever-growing repertoire as Georgiana Spencer, a controversial 18th century socialite who married into aristocracy and became one of the most famous females of her time. Her life ran on an almost parallel line with her direct descendent, PRINCESS DIANA. Georgiana was beautiful, glamorous, outgoing and loved by the public, who adored her every move. But, while everything seemed rosy on the surface, underneath she was trapped in a loveless marriage to the influential Duke of Devonshire (RALPH FIENNES) – one of the richest men in the UK.Director SAUL DIBB’s chronicle of this intriguing person portrays a frustrated female who, against all odds, rebelled against the upper class system. Her interest in politics led to an affair with a man who in time would become the Prime Minister of Britain (DOMINIC COOPER). Had she lived in the world as we know it she would certainly have been shot down in flames for her actions by the modern-day media. QUICK CLIPS  n At the time of writing, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) were still at loggerheads, and the peacemaker of the writer’s strike earlier this year, Disney chief ROBERT IGER, had no hope of a solution. But a group of SAG dissidents have announced they will challenge the current leadership of their union at the forthcoming elections on 18 September and insiders reckon it could be a close call as many actors have had a much too long summer holiday and want to return to work. One of the “dissidents” is said to be SALLY FIELD, who won an Oscar portraying a textile union activist in the 1979 movie Norma Rae.  n Two projects that have beaten the strike with SAG waivers will start filming this month. The Governess is romantic comedy about a thief (JENNIFER LOPEZ) who, in order to pull off a major bank heist, poses as a nanny to three unruly children of a wealthy widower. She falls for the kids and their father and must decide where her future lies.Silver Cord is a real life story about a man (director JAMES ORDONEZ’ real life brother) who came back to life after being declared clinically dead on multiple occasions… starring VAL KILMER and ERIC BALFOUR. n Catholic leaders turned down a request to film parts of Angels and Demons, the prequel to The Da Vinci Code, within Vatican City without even looking at the script. A spokesman said that “author DAN BROWN’s works peddle a type of fantasy that damages the common religious beliefs of the church”. n Director GEORGE MILLER has cast his first character for the much talked about movie Justice League: Mortal. MEGAN GALE is Wonder Woman – the film will unite this femme fatale with Batman, Superman, Aquaman and the Flash, plus other superheroes, to fight against the forces of evil. n Walt Disney have finally found their Alice for TIM BURTON’s 3-D twist on LEWIS CARROLL’s classic fantasy Alice in Wonderland. The 18-year-old Aussie MIA WASIKOWSKA will walk through the looking glass and may find herself questioning JOHNNY DEPP’s Mad Hatter – or maybe not. Initial work commences this month in England on LINDA (The Lion King) WOOLVERTON’s script. n Another role DEPP is considering is that of arch-villain The Riddler for the next Batman movie, if he turns it down BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN says he is interested. Studio bosses are also said to be keen to sign up PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN to portray Gotham City’s other master criminal, The Penguin, and ANGELINA JOLIE as Catwoman. n ROBERT LUDLUM, the acclaimed author who gave us the Jason Bourne series, is putting another one of his suspense thrillers on the big screen. The Matarese Circle is set during the Cold War and finds two spies, one from the CIA and the other from the KGB, who pair up to take on an international circle of killers. DENZIL WASHINGTON has already signed for a leading role. n MIKE MYERS is taking time off from writing the script for the fourth Austin Powers movie to join the cast of QUENTIN TARANTINO’s new project Inglorious Bastards. This World War II vehicle is about a band of misguided US soldiers who redeem themselves by heading into Nazi-occupied France. BRAD PITT, SIMON PEGG, ELI ROTH, B. J. NOVAK and possibly TIM ROTH are all on board. Filming hopefully starts in Germany next month. n The Simpsons creator MATT GROENING has announced there will be another movie when he has time to make it. If it’s anything like the last one… don’t bother.
