Health and Beauty - Weighty Issues

Weighty Issues

Words by Nikki Waterman 10/04/2008

In this month’s celeb diet gossip… Katie Holmes’ super strict, and bonkers, new diet that's taking Hollywood by storm. Jade Goody’s weight loss remains a hot topic of debate – did she really lose two stone (13 kilograms) in two weeks? And while Natalie Cassidy reveals the secrets behind her spectacular weight loss, Holly Willoughby vows never to go on a diet – but why?

Katie Holmes – loses three stone on veg dietWe’re not quite sure where the three stone (19 kilograms) were that she lost, but Katie Holmes has apparently shed that amount on a super-strict raw veggie diet. She certainly looks in spectacular shape, but her reported “diet” – which is little more than a fast in reality – takes some dedication. The 29-year-old started her regime last year and other A-listers are said to be so impressed with her fab figure that they’re clamouring to do the “KH” diet. According to an insider, Katie’s diet consists of carrot soup for breakfast and raw broccoli for lunch and dinner. In the evening she boosts her protein levels with steamed tofu or fish – but it’s the power of broccoli that’s the secret. The actress and husband Tom Cruise are said to be “buying organic broccoli by the bucket-load”. Oooh, the glamour. Amazingly, Katie is still managing to keep up the running regime she began last year in preparation for the New York marathon – which she completed in just over five hours. Broccoli’s obviously called a superfood for a reason.

Jade Goody – the mystery deepensA few weeks ago there was the story of Jade Goody’s miraculous two-stone (13 kilogram) weight loss and the conflicting story that reported she still had weight to lose. Well, the story rumbles on – and now even doctors are joining in the argument. Jade told a weekly magazine that she had lost two stone after spending two weeks at a boot camp in Wales. But, according to their spokeswoman, Jade only stayed a week and lost one stone two pounds (seven kilograms) – still a considerable weight loss in such a short amount of time. Marissa Peer, a nutritionist and hypnotherapist at the New You Boot Camp, had this to say: “Jade Goody came to New You Boot Camp for one week. During that week I devised a 1,500-calorie diet in keeping with government guidelines. It was an extremely healthy and safe diet and the foods eaten every day included breakfast or porridge oats or similar.” Jade’s weight seems to create as much scandal as her motor mouth. Last year she promoted her fitness DVD on the back of her new slim figure. But it was later revealed that the real reason behind her weight loss was liposuction. Jade’s spokesperson denied there was an issue, saying she had done nothing “unhealthy or dangerous”.

Natalie Cassidy’s diet revealedFormer soap star Natalie Cassidy is everywhere at the moment promoting her fitness DVD. She’s certainly a cracking advert for it after shedding three and a half stone (22 kilograms) through a combination of healthy diet and regular exercise. Now Natalie has divulged more about her new lifestyle – and it’s pretty tough. No carbs after 6pm, no food at all after 8pm, four litres of water a day, no nuts, no dried fruit and no more than two glasses of wine a week. On the plus side, the former EastEnders star still gets to eat curries, but opts for char-grilled chicken or lamb dishes with a big salad, and uses spices in her own cooking to liven up her food. In addition to her super-healthy diet, Natalie works out to her own DVD three to four times a week and walks everywhere. Well, she certainly looks great – they probably wouldn’t even recognise her on the Square.

Holly Willoughby: “I’ll never diet!”With all this talk of boot camps and broccoli, it’s good to hear a celeb talking about how much they love their food – and their body. So hurrah for “curvy” Holly Willoughby who isn’t afraid to enjoy her grub. Heck, the girl even eats pasta. In fact, Holly loves her figure so much she would never diet because she wouldn’t want to risk losing her big boobs. “If I diet, it comes off my top half and I become a weird pear shape. I much prefer to be busty and bottomy than all bottom and no boobs!” That’s not to say she doesn’t eat healthily – Holly loves a fruit smoothie and a bit of quinoa. She also hates junk food, so you won’t catch her munching on a Turkey Twizzler. But she admits to a weakness for mint choc chip ice cream and confesses to hating the gym. So full marks to the Dancing on Ice presenter for having a healthy attitude to body and food: it almost marks her out as freak in the crazy diet-obsessed celeb world.

CELEBRITY DIET WATCH To help her snacking between meals, Pamela Anderson chews on a piece of sugar-free chewing gum. With less than 10 calories per stick, it helps satisfy food cravings, prevents tooth decay and keeps breath fresh all day long! THINK PINK There could be something in Mariah Carey’s favourite three-day red fruit detox. Scientists have discovered that as well as being rich in disease-fighting antioxidants, strawberries, red grapes and blueberries can also help you lose weight. Red and purple fruit contains a natural pigment called anthocyanin which helps you to fight the flab by blocking fat absorption.

DID YOU KNOW? Having a couple of eggs in the morning might be the way forward if you want to shift those pounds. According to new research from the Rochester Centre for Obesity in America, eating eggs for breakfast could help to limit your calorie intake throughout the rest of the day, by more than 400 calories. Eggs are packed with a variety of nutrients including protein, zinc, iron and vitamins A, D, E and B12, but contain just 85 calories each. Old advice to limit eggs to just a few each week has also been abandoned. According to the Food Standards Agency, there’s now no limit to the number of eggs you can eat in a week as part of a healthy balanced diet. If you fancy starting the day with eggs we suggest you avoid frying them and combine them with wholemeal toast and a glass of vitamin C-rich unsweetened orange juice, which will help the body make the best use of the iron in the eggs.

SOUPER DUPER!Starting your meal with vegetable soup adds anti-ageing super nutrients, and is proven to help you eat less at your main course.

AND FINALLY…For a snack on the run, pack 12 almonds and an apple in your bag. The protein in the nuts will help to keep you full, while the apple releases energy slowly – all for just 127 calories and seven grams of fat!
