As we are still at the beginning of a new year, I thought what better time than to try out a new salon. Let me introduce you to Mi & Ma, a gorgeous hair and beauty salon in La Cala (which I arrived at after, surprisingly, a mere 15-minute drive from Marbella). “Mimar” is the Spanish verb for pampering, so where better to experience true indulgence!  

The salon is modern and stylish and uses a mixture of chrome complemented by refreshing blues, yellows and white tones. The all-round natural light and airy feel adds to the relaxing and refreshing ambience of this intimate salon, which invites you to escape for a couple of hours or a leisurely afternoon. Plans are also in the pipeline to turn the spacious terrace into a light-filled, breezy haven for al fresco treatments and outdoor massage. Free, easy parking is a godsend on the Coast and there’s plenty of it outside the modern commercial centre. The nearby Wednesday and Saturday markets also mean you can round off a busy day’s shopping with a relaxing treatment or hair styling.   

Mario, whose reputation as a leading stylist is established throughout the Coast, has 22 years experience in the hair industry. He has worked everywhere from Málaga to Madrid and even London, where he showcased his talents at the famed celebrity hair salon Cobella in Knightsbridge – now if that doesn’t tell you something! 
Mario tells me, “Our salon is about good quality for great prices. We use the Schwarzkopf professional range, so clients get great quality from start to finish.” You can choose from cuts, creative highlights, blow dries, styling, perming and luxury hair treatments, though Mario’s speciality has to be colour. “This is what I love,” he explains. “I believe it shows throughout my work.” And, if you fancy a little Va Va Voom, you can book in with Mi & Ma’s extensions specialist, who only uses the real hair range Great Lengths. 
The other half of this talented duo is Michaela. She had been in the industry for 11 years and can include the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge on her CV. Experience doesn’t come higher than working with the likes of supermodel Naomi Campbell and singer Courtney Love. Having trained in Guinot, Dermalogica, Decléor and Christian Dior, this is a therapist who really does know her stuff.  
“I use the Guinot range and my favourite treatments are facials and massage. I have travelled extensively and try to pick up different techniques from each country I visit.” This must have paid off because most clients end up falling asleep during her treatments as she blends deep cleansing and reviving beauty techniques with soothing and rebalancing facials or body massage. Guinot’s range of moisturising, cleansing and anti-ageing facials is certainly among the finest available throughout the world while, as summer draws nearer, Guinot’s detoxifying and firming aromatic body treatment is an absolute must!
