ONE OF THE UK’S TOP TRAINERS TO THE STARS OFFERS USEFUL ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE – AND VALUABLE TIPS TO LOSE THOSE EXTRA KILOS

WEIGHTY ISSUES

Victoria Beckham’s on yet another diet, only this time she’s hoping to gain weight – she’s even got her very own, very famous chef to help her. Dannii Minogue reveals the secrets to her X Factor body and Jessica Alba turns us all green with envy by declaring she “doesn’t diet”. Plus Jade Goody turns to drastic measures to lose her recently gained weight. Get the low-down on all these stories in this month’s round-up of diet news and gossip.

Posh wants to pile on the pounds

Now this is something we’d thought we’d never hear – Victoria Beckham wants to put weight on. Yes, the woman who lives on a diet of edamame beans and strawberries has been urged to beef herself up for the gruelling Spice Girls tour. Friends and family, notably husband David Beckham, were so concerned that Posh would struggle with the vigorous dance routines and hectic schedule on her current diet that they convinced her to bulk up.
This is not an easy task when taking into account that Victoria is allegedly so terrified of gaining even a single pound she eschews family roasts for faddy diet aids – such as fat-burning Chinese tea and algae ‘n’ seaweed shakes. The Spice Woman was reported to have been put on a spinach-rich diet to help her build up stamina, although she’d have to eat a hell of a lot of spinach to put on a stone on in a month. We suspect David figured that out, which is why he has called in friend and top chef Gordon Ramsay to devise a diet plan for his wife. And he’s enough to frighten anyone into gaining a stone.

Dannii’s X Factor body

She’s been the surprise hit on the latest X Factor, not just for her honest, punchy judgements but for her fab figure. At 5ft 2in (1.57 metres), Dannii’s a toned size 8, but doesn’t set foot in a gym and eats what she likes. Instead, the younger Ms Minogue says her fab figure is down to dancing. “I’m not good at sports, but I love dancing so I tend to stick to that.” She’s also a fan of that celebrity favourite, pole dancing, which is a great cardio workout that tones the arms, legs, abs and shoulders. But Dannii credits ashtanga yoga for really helping her tone up. “I just couldn’t believe how it transformed my body; it gives you such great strength and muscle tone.” Dannii, who in the past has been criticised for being bigger than her sister Kylie, is happy with her body, but admits it’s not perfect. “I don’t like my thighs, I don’t like my bum and I have a little bit of cellulite,” she admits. “But I don’t worry too much as no one is perfect. I’ve got a real body, not a model’s body.” And who are we to argue with an X Factor judge?

Jade Goody wants surgery

Rumour has it that Jade Goody’s slimming secrets are a pair of big knickers. But it looks like she’s no longer satisfied with this short-term quick fix. The reality TV star has piled on the pounds recently, putting on more than a stone (six kilograms) in less than a month through comfort eating. It’s believed she now weighs more than 12 stone and is so disheartened and worried that toy boy lover Jack Tweed will cheat again that she’s considering surgery to slim down. A friend said, “She’s having a tummy tuck and lipo; she may reduce her boobs too.” Jade had liposuction earlier this year, but the effects were somewhat damaged by her turning to comfort eating after her split with Jack. A friend of the Big Brother contestant said, “Jade seems really depressed. She drops her boys off at school, and then goes to a local café for a full English breakfast. Then she snacks on crisps and chocolate, with burgers for lunch and pasta for teatime.” Sounds like she needs to ditch the man and the chocolate.

Jessica Alba doesn’t diet

Mmm, just what we don’t want to hear while tucking into our salad: gorgeous and very slim Jessica Alba doesn’t do diets. Despite having one of Hollywood’s best bodies, the actress says she loves to cook the kind of food most A-listers would be straight on the Stairmaster just thinking about, and confesses to eating, horror of horrors, brownies. The film star, who is often voted one of the world’s sexiest women, admits to drinking too much coffee and says that she loves to rustle up “chicken with basil, truffle oil and stewed tomatoes”. So there you go, the secret to looking fantastic – brownies, coffee and oil. Now that’s a diet we can get right behind.

THE NEW SHOE!

ASICS Gel-Kensei 2 (£130)… This company has something of a reputation for making the best trainers, so it’s worth overlooking the fact that the footwear isn’t always the best looking. These new unisex trainers are made of a heart-regulating fabric that keeps your toes warm when it’s chilly out and cool once things get steamy. They have a cushioned heel, which helps you stay steady when darting from side to side or weaving around obstacles. They’re also designed to mimic the action of your ligaments, helping to propel you forward as you run (www.ascis.co.uk).

EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT…Wu-Long TeaThis “Chinese slimming tea” was recently featured on Oprah and is selling so fast in the US that you’re only allowed to buy six boxes at a time from its website, which asks, “How would you like to drink away pounds of stubborn body fat and inches from your waistline within 30 short days?”Nicki’s verdict:-The pros: Caffeine and a substance called “catechin” in all teas do have a slight thermagenic effect, which means you burn calories faster. The cons: You only burn off an extra eight to 10 calories half an hour after drinking a cup of tea, so at £20 a box its effect is small. Is there anything in it for you? It’s much healthier to drink tea than calorie-laden fizzy drinks, but switching to Wu-Long won’t make much difference. You’re better off following a sensible diet and exercise plan, which will really work.

AND FINALLY…Always eat some protein, such as a tuna salad or a handful of nuts, within half an hour of exercising. The protein feeds the muscles you’ve used during the exercise and helps to restore them. This is important because feeding them will greatly boost the fat-burning effects of the session. For more information on losing weight and getting active, check out www.nickiwaterman.com
