Health and Beauty - In and Out

In and Out

Words by Nicki Waterman 04/06/2006

WHAT’S IN

DORITOS – Hot Salsa Dippas Dip, just 40 calories per 100g and has lots of chillies to rev up your metabolism and burn extra calories.

THE DIET PLATE – This is painted with lines to guide your serving sizes of carbs, protein and veg. For details, visit www.thedietplate.com

WATER, WATER, WATER – Keep hydrated to avoid getting stressed and turning to food for comfort.

WHAT’S OUT

DORITOS DIPPAS CRISPS – A whacking 506 calories and 27g of fat per 100g. Dip carrot sticks instead.

THE “ONE SLIVER MORE WON’T HURT” PHILOSOPHY TO SERVING SIZES – Put it back, every sliver counts.

KATE BECKINSDALE’S DIET COKE HABIT – It’s full of caffeine that can trigger hunger.

THE A-LIST’S €0.77 (55p) DIET WATER
Psst, don’t tell anyone I told you, but there’s a secret slimming aid that certain A-listers and fashionistas would rather you didn’t know about. This miracle product? A bottle of water! Yep, H! can reveal that some of Hollywood’s biggest names have been stocking up on Cortex, a French water which – due to its unusually high levels of minerals – claims to actively aid weight loss (combined with a healthy diet and exercise, sadly). Stars including Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, Naomi Watts, Demi Moore and Susan Sarandon have all sampled it, while the newly svelte Donatella Versace is said to be a convert. Drink up, everyone.

CELEBRITY DIET TIP
You may find it hard to believe, but one of Sophie Anderton’s favourite foods is cheese. However, the savvy model, 28, has found the perfect way to enjoy the dieter’s nightmare food without piling on the pounds. Her secret: “I eat goat’s cheese containing 321 calories and 29.5g of fat, and a 75g wedge of goat’s cheese containing 264 calories and 22.4g of fat; that’s a
saving of 57 calories and 7.1g of fat. Sophie clearly has the right idea. What a clever girl.

THE 500-CALORIE WORKOUT
Get down to your target weight the easy way – break your workout into
manageable chunks.
If you want to lose even a pound, you’re looking at serious self-deprivation. A pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, so dropping one means denying yourself, say, 20 vodka Red Bulls or 14 doughnuts. Why put yourself through this life-zapping agony if you can burn the calories with
exercise that’s less misery-inducing? I always get my clients to divide however much weight they need to lose into 500-calorie “active sessions” and tick them off one by one until they reach their goal weight. Start now and you could be beach-beautiful within a month.
How long you need to work out to burn the magic 500 depends on your weight and how hard you work. The most accurate way to calculate calorie burn is to use a heart-rate monitor that you can programme with your weight and gender (try the Polar F4, €84 from El Corte Inglés). Or, use the table below as a guide. Do each exercise at a moderate intensity. You should be slightly flushed, need to breathe through your mouth and feel your temperature rise – but do not be working so hard that you have to stop.

CUT THE CRAVINGS
If you feel a craving and are tempted to dive into the biscuit tin, stop and have a protein-based snack instead. The protein in a few pieces of chicken, a mini Babybel cheese or a couple of slices of ham will nip the urge for carbs in the bud and keep you feeling full for two to three hours. It even helps speed up your metabolism.

SWEET TOOTH TIP
Sprinkle drops of vanilla essence on to a fabric-based plaster and stick on your wrist or hand. Every time you fancy a sweet snack like chocolate, have a sniff. It will help to overcome your cravings.

DID YOU KNOW?
One small glass of wine with your meal can keep blood-sugar levels low and help you to eat less.

 GET MILK
If you want to lose weight, drink milk! Recent research has found that a daily dose of low-fat dairy products can help your body to burn fat more quickly.

SOME LIKE IT HOT
Eating hot chillies can increase the number of calories you burn. Now scientists have found that spices such as paprika, cumin and turmeric contain salicyclic acid – the natural form of aspirin.  CREDIT: 16 minutes of jogging = DEBIT: four Cadbury’s Miniature Heroes (160
