DRAMATIC WEIGHT LOSSES OF THE STARS
While some stars have taken their dieting too far, others have lost just enough weight and look amazing. We take a look at Kelly Osbourne, Kirstie Alley and other celebs who have shed pounds to transform their figures, and reveal the secrets to their success.
Name: Kelly Osbourne
Age: 21
Weight loss: 2½st (16kg)
Kelly has admitted she finds the hardest thing about fame is having everyone talk about her body shape. After repeated comments about her weight and a reported breakdown, the 21-year-old singer and reality TV star took inspiration from her brother Jack’s impressive five-stone weight loss last year and shed two and a half stone. Incredible as it may seem, Kelly
Osbourne’s new slimline figure is down to ditching her Jammie Dodger habit, moving out of the Osbourne family mansion in LA and taking up dancing.
According to her cousin Terry Longden - reality hairdresser from The Salon - Kelly had an extreme Jammie Dodger addiction: “There was never just one packet in her dressing room: they left a case; nobody was allowed to touch them. We knew better than to come between her and her Jammie Dodgers.” Kelly also believes that moving out of the family home has helped her shed pounds. While living with her rock ’n’ roll parents in LA she admits: “The chef would cater to my every whim at all hours.” Now living on her own in London, with smaller portions and having to fend for herself, the weight has simply dropped off. Though she does still have a penchant for chocolate, saying: ‘I live on my own so don’t cook. If hungry I eat chocolate. That’s my only diet – and I’ve lost weight.” Having once said that most of her friends were “skinny and miserable”, she refuses to go on any stick-thin Hollywood diet, and now she has a stunning figure that onlookers at a recent US fashion show described as: ‘Not super-skinny, but absolutely amazing – really fit and
well.”
Name: Kirstie Alley
Age: 55
Weight loss: 5st (32kg)
Just 16 months ago, the once-slender Cheers star Kirstie Alley tipped the scales at an incredible 15st 7lbs. Having ballooned to a size 22, the 55-year-old mother-of-two decided that it was time to take action and get her weight under control. Less than a year later, she’s reached her goal and lost an impressive five stone. Kirstie’s transformation was achieved by joining
US weight-loss club Jenny Craig. The plan is similar to Weight Watchers – instead of cutting out carbs and fats, dieters are encouraged to go for calorie-controlled meals and regular exercise. The Cheers star lost her weight gradually – always the sensible option to crash dieting. She set
herself 10-pound targets and treated herself at every milestone, by giving herself incentives to reach her goals, such as a trip to her holiday home in Maine with her daughter. As part of her weight-loss programme Kirstie has a set calorie and exercise regime: 1,400 calories and 40 minutes working out a day. Her favourite exercise is dancing with her sister and best friend. Now a trim size 10 and weighing just 10st 7lbs, Kirstie looks incredible and her svelte new figure has helped increase her confidence no end: “The amount of attention I’m getting from the opposite sex is amazing. I feel good. I feel flirty.” Kirstie’s next goal is to maintain her new figure. She explains: ‘I’m doing maintenance now – a word I’m not accustomed to. This will be my next big hurdle: can I maintain my weight in 2006? I bet I can – and if I can,
anyone can!” She’s worked so hard to reach her target and she looks fab, so let’s hope she sticks to her guns and carries on with the hard work.
Name: Janet Jackson
Age: 39
Weight loss: 3st (19kg)
Dubbed “Janet Fatson” by the tabloids, having piled on the pounds, 39-year-old Janet Jackson now looks more like the slender, toned pop star we all remember. According to reports, the singing sensation turned to comfort eating to cope with a turbulent year and she tipped the scales at an incredible 11st 6lbs earlier this year. Her career took a nosedive, with her last album flopping following that “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl in 2004, in which her breast was exposed during her now-memorable
performance with Justin Timberlake. But with a new album release in the pipeline, record bosses at Janet’s label reportedly ordered her to lose the flab or face being dropped. The threat appears to have worked, as an incredible 12 weeks later Janet stepped out revealing her new streamlined figure –a petite 8st 6lbs. Sources have revealed that she’s so determined to keep the pounds off that she’s had sessions at an exclusive weight-loss acupuncture clinic in Los Angeles in the hope that it will help
conquer her junk food cravings. The secret to Janet’s three-stone weight-loss is simple – plenty of exercise and sensible eating. With the help of a personal trainer, she exercised six days a week to tone her body. She also followed a strict junk- and sugar-free diet. She’s won the battle of the bulge, so let’s hope that her next album is equally successful.
Name: Courtney Love
Age: 40
Weight loss: 2½st (16kg)
You’d imagine that the only diet Courtney Love has followed is one of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. However, the 40-year-old widow of music legend Kurt Cobain appears to have got her life back on track after a turbulent few years during which she lost custody of her daughter and became better known for her wild ways than her music career. The former wild woman of rock was reportedly overheard swapping diet and exercise tips with a the new, slim-line Jack Osbourne. According to a “spy” for The Mirror at a pre-Grammys party: “It was a shocking sight. Both of them were sipping Voss mineral water and turning down all the gorgeous cocktails that were being bought round. They were actually discussing their favourite smoothie flavours.” However shocking the sight may have been – the healthier lifestyle that
Courtney appears to have adopted seems to be working wonders for her, as our pictures show.

AND FINALLY…
If you don’t feel great in your bikini, try a detox week. It will give you a chance to reassess what you’re eating and how you want to progress with your diet. Detoxing is about cleaning up your dietary act. Dump the junk; eat porridge or sugar-free muesli for breakfast, fruit as snacks, and
extra-lean meat, fish, eggs and tofu with un-refined carbohydrate foods such as multigrain bread, wholemeal pasta and baked sweet potatoes. Limit coffee to one cup, and drink a litre of water daily. An excellent detox product that matches this simple style of eating is Liver Detox Tincture from the Organic Pharmacy: www.theorganicpharmacy.com. A week of such detoxing can lead to a weight loss of up to four pounds.
