One of the questions I’m often asked is why, if exercise is supposed to be so good for us, does it make us so hungry? It’s a cruel twist of fate that while a tough workout seems to blunt a man’s appetite, it stimulates a women’s a women’s. If you find you’re doing lots of exercise, yet the pounds are refusing to budge, try toning down your routine and doing something less manic. Instead of doing a 30-minute vigorous jog, which will burn 500 calories and leave you hungry, burn the same calories from just over an hour walking. It’s gentler and won’t stimulate your appetite.
DOES LATE NIGHT EATING MAKE YOU FATTER?
It’s not true that our bodies burn calories more slowly from night-time food, although people who eat most of their day’s food after 6pm weigh more than those who distribute meals throughout the day. This is probably because we show less restraint during the evenings – treating ourselves to food rewards after a stressful day. EAT GRAPEFRUIT LOSE POUNDSStart eating grapefruit! A three-month study carried out by the Nutrition And Matabolic Research Center at eh Scripps Clinic, US, showed that adults who ate half a grapefruit with each meal, three times a day, lost about 4lb more than those eating a similar diet, but without any grapefruit. The researchers believe that enzymes present in grapefruit affect the way your body deals with sugar, making it less likely to be laid down as fat. And the diet may well reduce your risk of diabetes, too, say experts.
TAME THAT TUM
Are you suffering with a ‘menopot’? From the age of 35, fat makes a beeline for our tums because of the declining levels of the sex hormone oestrogen. To help prevent this, you must relax – stress hormones have been shown to increase belly blubber. Also, have more calcium, which helps to burn fat. Try yogurt drinks such as Sveltesse Optimize, which contain 25 per cent of our daily calcium and just 28 cals per serving.

GENIUS CELEB FITNESS TIP
I’ve discovered the perfect running partner, thanks to Amanda Holden: “I only listen to one album when I’m running on the treadmill – Life Thru A Lens by Robbie Williams. I know I can slow down when Angels comes on, but I have to sprint to Let Me Entertain You. It’s a great way of pushing my fitness levels!

SWAP SHOP - CUT 1,000 CALORIES NOW
1.)SWAP CHEDDAR FOR FETA
If nothing but cheese will do, make a smart swap. Cheeses such as feta, mozzarella and even creamy Camembert are lower in both fat and calories than Cheddar (feta has the fewest cals, with just 75 per 25g). If you’re in it for the calcium, however, then go for Parmesan.
CALORIES SAVED: 39 per 25g
2.)SWAP ORANGE JUICE FOR TOMATO JUICE
Tomato juice for weight loss is better than orange because it contains less than half the calories and has a lower glycaemic load, which means that it won’t cause a blood-sugar surge. And it’s also a rich source of betacarotene, which converts to vitamin A.
CALORIES SAVED: 65 per half pint (280ml)
3.)SWAP PRINGLES FOR MINI OATCAKES
Instead of polishing off a pot of Pringles, try oatcakes with dips. Ten mini oatcakes contain fewer calories than a 50g mini tub of Pringles, plus they keep you feeling fuller for longer. The secret to successful dieting is to keep your blood sugar level even and the best carbohydrate to achieve that is oats. Try Nairns’s Mini Oatcakes.
CALORIES SAVED: 95
4.)SWAP SCRAMBLED EGGS FOR SCRAMBLED TOFU
Eggs are nutritionally sound, but variety’s the spice of life and scrambled tofu is low in calories, cholesterol free and a good source of protein. Chop one courgette, two stalks of celery and one tomato, then sauté in 60ml water and a tablespoon of olive oil. When they’re nearly cooked, crumble in 200g tofu and stir occasionally for five minutes, adding your favourite herbs to taste.CALORIES SAVED: 63 Per serving
5.)SWAP A SANDWICH FOR SUCHI
Sushi is much lower in calories than a cheese and tomato doorstep. Try Salmon Nigiri. The salmon contains omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are not only important for heart health, they’re anti-inflammatory and help promote healthy hair, skin and nails. And if you suffer from IBS, the ginger served with sushi can help calm your digestion.CALORIES SAVED: 149 TRY THIS!CHAMPNEY’S healthy eating plate.
If you are trying to lose the pounds but they just won’t shift, it’s worth splashing out on a special chic plate used in all the Champneys health spas. The plate shows you exactly how many veggies, starchy foods like pasta or bread and protein foods like meat and chicken you should be eating at each meal.
The plate costs £22 (approx euro 31). Call 00 41442 291 000 for more information.
AND FINALLY…
Britney Spears and the Beckhams are cranberry juice fans – and with good reason. The berry contains a supernutrient that lowers bad cholesterol and helps fight tooth decay and cyctitis. A 200ml glass of Ocean Spray Cranberry Light has 48 calories – half that of normal fruit juice.
