A touch of glamour

International make-up artist Armand and leading photographer Paul Yaffé invited REM radio presenter Mary Harboe and her daughter Carolina to a special Mother’s Day make-over. Fusion art is an original gift idea for any occasion, including Mother’s Day − read on for a special offer for H! readers. No sooner has Valentine's Day been and gone than March is upon us, and so too is Mother's Day. Of course. we should pamper the person that has nurtured us and looked after us every day of the year, but to celebrate this special occasion I decided to team up with celebrated photographer Paul Yaffé, from Yaffé Fusion Art, to pamper a mother and daughter and give them a movie star makeover. We managed to persuade busy mum and REM radio presenter Mary Harboe and her daughter Carolina to come down to Paul Yaffé's studio in Estepona and receive the five-star treatment. Regular readers of my column will know that true beauty isn't about looking young but looking good. So when I asked Mary what sort of look she wanted to go for, and she said fresh and contemporary, that was no problem. I told Mary and Carolina that vibrant greens and coral and metallic shades were big for this season, and that I would use similar colours on both of them in different ways. Mary is also no stranger to the camera and, as everybody has witnessed some shocking pictures of themselves, she was fascinated to learn the tips from Paul and myself on how to look good for the camera. As you can see from the following pictures the day went well, but the transformation was even better! Tips for photographic make-upIf you're going out for an evening and you know you're going to be photographed, always take a powder compact to remove any shine as the camera flash will bounce anything shiny off and can easily make you look greasy. Pay special attention to the forehead, nose and chin. Glossy skin is in this season but this style of make-up is a big no, no and can easily go wrong! Keep a little bit of gloss to the lips only. If you use a light reflecting concealer pen, don't be too heavy-handed around the eyes as you can look like a panda on photographs. Use more colour on the eyelids than you normally would as this will show up better on the pictures. Clever use of bronzer can change your face shape, so don't use all over the face; just use in places where you want to sculpt your features: i.e. under cheekbones. To minimise double chins use a darker shade of powder underneath the chin. Be very conscious of how you hold drinks in a picture: try to keep your fingers together so your hands look more delicate. THE MAKE-OVERSMARYDelicate eye tissue and anti-ageing products: Sisley, Guerlain and LancômeFirst of all I prepared Mary’s skin for make-up. It’s extremely important, especially as we get older, that you take time on your skin before make-up. Mary’s concerns were fragile eye tissue and, of course, the latest anti-ageing products. I used a mixture of Lancôme, Sisley and Guerlain. Stand out products included Sisley’s Daily Line Reducer, which is already a celebrity favourite. This works effectively on deep lines, and using the product morning and night on specific areas will really make a difference. Guerlain’s Super Aqua Serum was used for the delicate eye area, which includes active ingredients of Blue Atlas Cedar to revitalise puffy dehydrated eyes. The skin was then protected using Sisley’s All Day All Year, which works on shielding the skin from environmental stress for a minimum of eight hours. Foundation: Cover FX Fluid Foundation and Guerlain’s Concealing PenFoundation was then added using Cover FX Fluid Foundation. Starting from the nose spread outwards, making sure to avoid the eye area. Under the eyes I used Guerlain’s Concealing Pen − this concealer is light reflecting, comes in different shades and is perfect on more mature skins. (Remember: don’t apply too much if you’re having photographs taken as it can reflect the light of the flash and make the under eye area too white and pale.) Eye make-up: Guerlain, Bliss, Kohl eyeliner and Clinique If your eye shadow has a tendency to crease then Guerlain and Bliss both produce crease resisting make-up bases. I decided to use spring colours on Mary, which included lime green, forest green and gold. She was a little shocked at my choice of colours but was determined to put her trust in the “expert” and try something new. The lime green went on the central part of the eye, the forest green was applied to the outer edge and the gold was applied into the crease. Silver was used on the inner corner of the eye to brighten the eye and eye liner was used on the inside of the eye and all the way around to create a smouldering effect. If you use eyeliner on the inside of the eye make sure it’s a Kohl pencil. Eyebrows are extremely important so make sure they are shaded in and looking natural. I used Clinique Soft Blonde eyebrow pencil. This is also important if you’re a spectacle wearer as they give the eyes an instant lift. Lips: Dior Lipstick Moving onto the lips I used a Dior lipstick which was pink and shimmery. Blush and definition: MAC blusher and Guerlain bronzerThe face was given definition with clever use of blusher and bronzer: for blusher I used a touch of MAC on the apples of the cheek and then lots of Guerlain terracotta bronzer underneath the cheekbone. CAROLINAFoundation, concealer and powder: Givenchy Sublimine FoundationFor Mary’s daughter Carolina, whose personal style is very natural with the use of browns and neutral shades, I wanted to give her a fun and fresh spring look. So, after preparing the skin and using Givenchy Sublimine Foundation to even out the skin tone, concealer was again used all around the eyes while powder was applied liberally down the T-Zone. This is a necessity if you have a date with the paparazzi. Eyes: Sisley’s Golden Touch, Sisley eyebrow pencil, Shu Uemura shadow and Diorshow mascara I used similar colours on Carolina’s eyes that I used for her mum but in a very different way. Sisley’s Golden Touch was used over the entire eye while Shu Uemura shadow called Me Green was used as a liner all around the eye. For this particular look mascara is imperative so I used Christian Dior, Diorshow Mascara. Top tip for applying this: apply on the top of the upper lashes to disperse any shadow that may have fallen and then zig-zag the mascara from the bottom of the lashes to the top of the lashes. Apply generously to the top and bottom lashes. The eyebrows were also accentuated using Sisley’s new eyebrow pencil in Blonde. Lips: Mary Kay lipstick in goldThe lips remained neutral by using Mary Kay lipstick in gold (
www.marykaycosmetics.com). I used this particular shade on Cutting It and Waterloo Road actress Angela Griffin for her wedding. Cheeks: Origins Pinch Your CheeksThe cheeks remained fresh and vibrant by using Origins Pinch Your Cheeks cheek stain, while the cheekbones were sculpted using Clinique Bronzer 02. LOOKING YOUR BEST Paul Yaffé offers tips on how to look good in front of the camera at a party or event: ■ Always look into the camera – don’t look around to see what everyone else is doing.■ Always lean forward a little from the waist towards the camera.■ Always move the head forward slightly towards the camera.■ Never lean back on a sofa or a chair. Instead, sit near the front edge and lean forward.■ Don’t talk when the camera is pointing at you.■ Pretend you’re enjoying yourself (even when you’re not) – you’ll look great!■ Don’t fold your arms, or pull jackets behind your back with your arms – unless you want a large tummy!
