Art nouveau meets the Orient

Just Cavalli Art nouveau meets the Orient

Words by 05/10/2006

Milan fashion week was bought to an extravagant close with designer Roberto Cavalli's autumn/winter collection - which mixed 1920s, art nouveau and Imperial Chinese influences. Inspired by the Orient, Cavalli delivered mountains of rich embroidery, brocade, velvet robes trimmed with chinchilla and mink, slippery silk dresses, and gowns beaded with peacock motifs and trimmed with feathers.

Previously the catwalk had been exposed to thigh-high splits and acres of cleavage, but Cavalli's latest collection revealed a distinct lack of bare flesh - replaced by the considerably more conservative polo neck.

As his wife Eva explained, "The Cavalli woman this season is strong on the inside but doesn't need to show it."
