Hilary Duff

THESE DAYS HILARY DUFF ACTRESS HAS METAMORPHISED INTO MORE HILARY DUFF MUSIC ENTERTAINER - BUSY TOURING THE US AND EUROPE WITH HER OWN ROCK BAND. SHE TOOK TIME OUT FROM THE TOUR TO TALK ABOUT HER EXPERIENCES PLAYING LIVE SHOWS AND HER PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

INTERVIEW BY SUZIE BARNES/FAMOUS

Any pre-show rituals?
"My band and I and some of the crew get together, and we put our left hand over our right hand, and we all hold hands. Just, like, to circle up and say we hope no mess ups, no falls - I've fallen a couple of times - inspire people, have a good show, keep your energy up. It gets really repetitive doing the same show every night, so kind of hearing that (helps).

Do you get nervous before you go onstage?
"No, I get nervous before the tour kicks off. I do (get nervous) the first couple of shows, but I guess I've gotten so used to it that it doesn't really bother me anymore. You know what's weird? I get nervous after the show. I guess it's like you've been out there, and you've put so much energy out there, and there's been so much noise aimed at you that I guess afterwards you're just (she breathes in and exhales) like jittery and antsy and you have to chill out, and then you just crash."

What do you do after the show to calm down?
" I can't eat till like an hour after the show, because I'm (makes a funny noise insinuating that she's too hyped up) just crazy. We are usually in a rush to get out of there because they get really big traffic jams, so we've gotta get our bus out of there because we have to make it to the next town, so I'm really hurrying. Like I'll shower after the show, and then I'll throw on sweatpants and jump onto the bus."

What do you eat after the show?
"It depends. I usually eat before the show, so it depends on if I'm hungry or not. I'm not a very healthy eater, but I'll have chicken fingers (giggles). But I've made myself be really good for the last couple of months and I'm going to continue it during the tour. I'm going to try to eat healthy."

Did you do any hardcore workouts to prepare for the tour?
"No, I have no time, you know. Thank God I like rehearsing for the tour and stuff because that's a pretty good workout, doing that all day long, but I have no time and no energy."

What about taking dancing lessons? Or anything else to prepare physically for the tour?
"I haven't had time. I've been shooting movies."

Did you lose weight?
(Laughs) "Well I think I lost a little bit of weight, but I think a lot of that has to do with just growing up and eating healthy. I've been really eating little all throughout the day, and I saw such a big difference so fast, and now I'm, like, this is awesome! I'm still full all the time, and I think it's (eating small meals throughout the day) helping.

You never fell into that too-skinny Hollywood trend...
"Yeah, I will never. If that's what they like, that's what they like. And whatever's going on in their life it's them, and that's fine. I'm pretty muscular, you know, I'm pretty strong, and I used to be a gymnast when I was little, and I think it kind of ruined me because it bulked me up, so now the second I work-out, if I do weights or anything, I've got muscles. I still have a trampoline at home. I'll jump on the trampoline for 30 minutes a day for five days and l see muscles in my legs. I don't like it at all. I think it's feminine to not be so skinny, and I like to look normal, and I think it's also important for girls who look up to me to not see that I don't look healthy, because then they want to feel like that's normal, and that's not normal. It puts added pressure on girls who already have so much pressure to deal with."

Do you worry about the effects of people seeing Nicole and Lindsay getting so thin?
"I haven't had too much time to see what people think about it. I know they think that they're too skinny. They are really skinny. I think the focus on people's personal life and what's going on is way too extreme right now, so I think it's just weird, all those magazines that are really gossipy and stuff. They'll act concerned, and then five seconds later they'll say some really snarky, mean comments about it, and I don't understand why it's so negatively driven, everything, you know."

Do you think magazines should stop focusing on people partying?
"Well, I mean, why would they do that? They're making so much money that way because people love to hear about it. People want to hear negative stuff more than they want to hear positive stuff. I've managed to stay out of them (gossip rags) a lot."

How have you managed to stay out of the gossip rags?
"Well, if you think about it, I choose to. I go out to clubs and stuff sometimes with my friends and my sister to dance and just have fun and stuff, but it's a lifestyle that you choose to be seen or not be seen. And, you know, there's a front door and a back door; and one door you get seen at, and one door you don't get seen at."

Are you a party girl?
"Not at all. I feel like I work my butt off and I could never (party that hard). Going from filming a movie, to being in the studio at night, to promoting a movie that you have coming out, to promoting a single, to flying here, to flying there, to coming here and rehearsing for 10 hours a day, and then going home and packing, and wardrobe fittings. And it's like, I don't know how they have the energy to go out and do that kind of thing. And I figure if I have time off I really want to spend it with people that I know care about me, and not really have to go to work. Even if you're going out, and you're partying, or you're doing whatever they're doing, you're working, you know, because you're getting stared at."

There are so many instant celeb BFFs ("Best Friends Forever"). You stayed away from that...
"Because I wonder how much they care about each other. Like, I don't have a lot of friends who are in the business, you know."

Who is your best friend?
"I have a couple. I feel like that's kind of a mean phrase because you have different best friends. I have a really good friend who travels with me a lot, and her name is Britney. And she's not interested in being an actress or a singer, and she stays out of the business. She grew up in Burbank, and, like, she is my best friend in the world. And she actually - I'm so proud of her - just did make-up school."

Could she become your make-up person?
"That's what I'm thinking. She travels with me anyway during the year, and we've gone through so much together."

Is she like your assistant?
"I guess a little bit. When we go on tour and stuff I pay her a little bit because, I figure, she's 19, and if she was staying in LA she'd probably get a job. She helps me a little bit stay organised. My other best friend is Taylor, and she is on tour with me over the summer-time because she's not working during the summer, and they (she and Britney) do the same thing, and we're all really good friends. And I have a couple really close guy friends. I know a lot of people, and I see a lot of people when I go out that I know, but not people that I'm close with on a day-to-day basis."

Are you tired?
"I'm pretty exhausted. I'm good right now 'cause it's early. It's like the exhaustion that a night of sleep doesn't fix, you know? But I'm so pumped up, just about the tour and everything that's going on, so I'm doing good."
